The Power of Science-Based Goals
At Evercare Medical, we adopt a science-based approach to reducing our environmental impact. As part of the Asker Group, a leading distributor of medical supplies and equipment in Europe, our goal is to lower the healthcare sector’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. But what exactly do we mean by science-based targets?
Why Science-Based?
Science-based targets are crucial for aligning corporate actions with climate science. To achieve an approved Science-Based Target, companies must first commit to the Science-Based Target initiative (SBTi) and then submit their targets for validation within 24 months. This involves completing a comprehensive scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions inventory following the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard. The targets must align with the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
Transparency and Commitment: Going Public
Transparency is key when it comes to science-based targets. By making these targets public, companies elevate their commitment beyond internal goals. The targets are typically divided into near-term targets for 2030 and long-term net-zero targets, to be achieved by 2050 at the latest.
A Collaborative Approach: Reaching Our Goals Together
Our parent company, Asker Healthcare Group, has set near-term science-based targets, validated by SBTi reviewers. These targets include a 42% reduction in absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2030, from a 2021 base year. Additionally, Asker aims to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services by 51.6% per million SEK value added within the same timeframe. As a critical contributor within the Asker Healthcare Group, Evercare Medical is focused on reducing our product-related emissions to meet these targets.
Evercare Medical's Role
Achieving ambitious targets can be daunting, but success lies in prioritizing areas with the most significant environmental impact. At Evercare Medical, we have mapped our environmental hotspots using scientifically accepted methods and developed a strategic plan that involves our suppliers and sub-suppliers. This comprehensive approach ensures that we contribute effectively to the group's overall emissions reduction targets.
Join the Movement
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The SBTi promotes best practices in science-based target setting and independently assesses companies’ targets. Learn more about SBTi here.
