A Strategic Journey Toward the 2030 Paris Agreement Targets
Achieving the Paris Agreement targets for 2030 is not a straightforward task; it requires consistent action and strategic work. At Evercare Medical, we are committed to modifying our processes to minimize our environmental impact. While our top priority remains the quality and safety of our products, we understand that achieving these goals is a gradual process. We, along with our distributors and customers, are working diligently to meet the 2030 targets. To support this effort, a more dynamic approach to procurement and tender periods is essential.
The Urgent Need for Dynamic Procurement
Johanna Pollnow, Marketing & Digitalization Manager at Evercare Medical, emphasizes the need for companies to take environmental responsibility seriously.
"At Evercare Medical, we are driven to transition to products with reduced environmental impact. We are committed to continuous improvements and assisting our customers and manufacturers in reducing our shared environmental impact."
So, what might this dynamic approach look like?
Implementing Continuous Improvement During Tender Periods
Today's public tenders focus heavily on sustainability during the bidding phase. However, to address the urgent environmental challenges we face, a more dynamic approach is needed—one that encourages ongoing supplier improvements throughout the contract period.
Strategies for a Dynamic Approach:
- Rewarding Carbon Reduction Commitments: Suppliers who commit to credible carbon reduction strategies and have validated Science-Based Targets (SBTi) should be rewarded.
- Encouraging Collaborative Projects: During the tender contract period, collaborative efforts targeting joint environmental hotspots can significantly accelerate decarbonization.
- Improving Scalability and Commercial Adaptability: A collaborative approach can also enhance scalability, reduce cost differentials for environmentally friendly solutions, and facilitate earlier volume building.
The Importance of Incentives for Continuous Improvement
Johannes Mauritzson, Commercial Manager & ESG Transformation Manager at Evercare Medical, suggests, "Introducing more incentives that reward companies for investing in improvement efforts during the tender contract period could drive faster innovation and reduce environmental impact more rapidly. This approach also supports customers in achieving their environmental goals."
Identifying Key Environmental Impact Areas
At Evercare Medical, we focus on identifying the areas within our products that have the most significant environmental impact. To do this effectively, we conduct comprehensive analyses of the entire production and life cycle to accurately identify environmental hotspots. For instance, in the production of the Embra Proceed glove, we found that the most significant environmental impact occurred during the production process, not during transportation. By using a new material that requires less energy in production, we were able to lower emissions substantially.
Top Three Takeaways
Improvements During the Tender Period:
When committing to a product over an extended period, ensure that tender requirements include provisions for ongoing improvements from the supplier.
Incentives:
Increasing incentives for suppliers can accelerate decarbonization efforts and help mitigate environmental impacts more effectively.
Value-Based Procurement:
Develop a dynamic procurement model that rewards suppliers committed to measurable and continuous improvements in reducing environmental impact.
